CBT "Compulsory Basic Training" was introduced
in 1991, and is now mandatory for all learner riders
of bikes 50cc and over, whatever
licence they have and recently, for mopeds (under 50cc) for
holders of a full car licence issued after 1February 2001.
Holders of a full car license issued prior to 1 February
2001 can ride a moped (under 50cc). without CBT.
It is only valid for 2 years - within that time you must
pass your full test or re-take the CBT.
When you do the full test, the CBT certificate must be presented
to the examiner.
The course can be done on any type of bike such automatic
scooters or mopeds and the certificate covers all other
types.
However, if the test is taken on a bike with a sidecar
/ three-wheeler the CBT will be restricted to those types.
Hints & Tips": it is illegal to ride
a motorcycle or moped on public roads without a valid CBT
certificate or full licence.
Most insurance companies will not issue an insurance certificate
to a learner until a valid CBT certificate has been produced.
You can only get the certificate once you successfully complete
of a training course run by an Approved Training Body (ATB).
The CBT course covers the following
- overview of the objectives
- protective clothing and equipment e.g helmets, gloves
bets
- the bike's controls
- routine bike checks
- putting the bike on the stand
- starting& moving off
- bike handling
- slowing down & stopping
- changing gears (on geared bikes only).
- left turns
- right turns
- observation and signaling
- emergency stops
- defensive riding
- discussion about riding on the road.
- on-road riding
The practical element of the course involves instruction
in a safe environment such as a school or car park, and
the
on-road usually involves 2 students per instructor, one riding
in front, one behind, with radio contact with the instructor.
Once you have a CBT certificate you can take the DSA test
to get your full licence.
