Hoorah - soon we can ride in bus lanes... well, 5% of them..
On 5 January 2009 an 18 month trial starts allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes. Great news and about time too I hear you say - but before you get too excited read the small print. It's only the 'red route' bus lanes (those with red instead of yellow lines.)
As is fairly typical of London's disjointed governance, the other bus lanes operated by individual boroughs as opposed to Tfl will have their own rules. So as usual what applies in one part of town may change a mile down the road possibly leading to more confusion and more fines for good intentioned but unaware bikers.
Still it's a start. Read more here and you can downloads PDFs about the trial and which lanes you'll be able to use.
Yuk! Another great reason to get on two wheelsBBC : "More than one in four commuters has bacteria from faeces on their hands"
Want to see what it's like ?
As usual YouTube provides the answer! See a video on our why bike page
GPS? - or still getting lost or using an A to Z?
Not so long ago, even getting GPS in the car was a major
headache, expensive and arguably not worth the bother. As
for the bike then you could forget it.
But now things have changed. First, accessories allowing you
to attach (and even power) a waterproof unit to a motorcycle let you use car units and over the last year or so we're seeing dedicated bike GPS units from the likes of Garmin and Tom Tom.
